As they search for a new player to replace Yedlin, Inter Miami are continuing their preference to look at the Argentine market.

Yedlin’s two-season stint with Inter Miami came to an abrupt end this week as he finalized an unexpected transfer to TQL Stadium. The former Premier League player is about to start a new chapter in his life after being moved for $172,799 in General Allocation Money.

Yedlin, a defender for the United States national team, was captain of the club when Messi landed in Florida in the summer of 2023. He helped Inter Miami celebrate their historic Leagues Cup victory by helping to raise the trophy.

Quickly accepting the decision, Yedlin played his last game with Messi, Luis Suarez, and Sergio Busquets in a 5-0 thrashing of Orlando City over the weekend. This transfer puts the USMNT international back where he feels most at home.

After playing for Tottenham, Newcastle, and Galatasaray in Europe, Yedlin returned to his homeland in February 2022 and signed with the Herons. As David Beckham and company continue to grow, the 30-year-old fullback has been a regular for Inter Miami.

Having returned to the area, he has effectively completed a full circle. That’s because he previously played for the University of Akron during his collegiate years in Ohio.

Who will replace DeAndre Yedlin?
Inter Miami are now active in their pursuit of a right-back to replace DeAndre Yedlin. Reportedly, the Herons have sent a bid to Boca Juniors for Marcelo Weigandt, maintaining their trend of acquiring Argentine players.

Quite a few Argentinians have lately joined Inter Miami, adding to an already impressive roster. The addition of Lionel Messi, a superstar player, undoubtedly contributed to that. Recently, ‘Tata’ Martino’s side have added young players like Federico Redondo, Tomas Aviles, Facundo Farias, and Diego Gomez.

The MLS side battled great competition from Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Liverpool for Fernando Redondo. However, they ultimately prevailed in their pursuit, making a bold statement with the acquisition.

Inter Miami’s recruiting campaign in Argentina is far from done; the club is now courting Weigandt, a player for Boca Juniors. Club officials have formally approached Boca with a bid to acquire the right back, claims Cesar Luis Merto.

In addition, Gaston Edul adds that negotiations have begun in preparation for the possible move of the Argentine. Once he graduated from Boca’s academy, Weigandt saw action in 74 games, scoring three goals and setting up seven more.

Strained relationship with Boca Juniors
The funds that were made available by Yedlin’s departure seem to be going straight into Weigandt’s contract. It all depends on their ability to persuade Boca to agree to the sale since there has been no indication of the progress of the negotiations so far.

For some time, the relationship between the player and Boca had been strained and unproductive, as per Ole. Seemingly, it has finally concluded. Weigandt has ceased to play for the club ever since the talk of his possible exit.

The youngster’s father, Alejandro Weigandt, has condemned the president and club of the Xeneize for making his son’s departure more difficult.

Inter Miami are continuing their path of recruiting Argentine players, as they have reportedly sent an offer to Boca Juniors for right-back Marcelo Weigandt.

Inter Miami have a number of Argentinians in their ranks, and a fair few of them have been signed recently. Of course, the marquee signing of Lionel Messi was completed in July 2023.

There have also been moves for youngsters Diego Gomez, Facundo Farias, Tomas Aviles and Federico Redondo of late.

The move for the latter was a statement one, as the MLS side beat world-renowned clubs Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid to the transfer – the interest from those sides was reported in a TEAMtalk exclusive.

The Argentine recruitment drive at Inter Miami is not over, with Boca Juniors man Weigandt the latest to be courted.

According to Cesar Luis Merto, the club have made a formal offer to Boca for the right-back.

The journalist adds that they are now negotiating ahead of the potential transfer for the Argentine.

Weigandt has played 74 games for Boca since coming through their academy – he has scored three goals and assisted a further seven.

While Yedlin leaves one Argentine no.10 behind in Miami, he gets to play alongside another in Cincinnati – last season’s MLS MVP Luciano Acosta.

The right-back detailed his excitement at getting to share the field with the attacking-midfielder.

“It’s interesting. I don’t think you see it happening that often. It’s exciting. It’s a new experience. There’s obviously great players on this team. There’s another special Argentinian ’10’ that we have as well,” Yedlin said at a press conference.

“Excited to get to work with him and see what he’s able to do.”

Acosta scored 17 MLS goals alongside 10 assists last season, and then notched two goals and two assists as his side crashed out in the semi-finals of the playoffs.

Yedlin seems happy in his new surroundings, getting to play with a top player yet again, and Miami will hope Weigandt is an ideal replacement for him if the move gets over the line.

Hence, time is of the essence, as they should act quickly to sign Weigandt, given that they are also busy with other negotiations.

This forced the Florida-based club to offload the Brazilian to Esporte Clube Vitória in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A. As a result, Inter Miami finds itself in a favorable position to acquire replacements for these departures while remaining compliant with MLS regulations. For now, Inter Miami would see the RB signing as the main agenda. It remains to be seen if they complete either acquisition in time.

We have signed defender Marcelo Weigandt on loan from Argentine side Club Atlético Boca Juniors through the 2024 MLS season.

Inter Miami CF announced today it has signed defender Marcelo Weigandt on loan from Argentine side Club Atlético Boca Juniors through the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) season; the Club will also hold an option to extend the loan for the defender through the 2025 season. The right back will reinforce the team’s defense for the remainder of the 2024 season pending receipt of his P-1 Visa.

“We’re pleased to bring defender Marcelo Weigandt on loan from Boca Jrs. He is a skillful young defender that is fit and ready to contribute. Marcelo comes with experience in both domestic and international competitions. We think this addition helps strengthen our squad to compete for titles.” said Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson.

“I’m excited and proud to be joining such an ambitious club like Inter Miami. I’m looking forward to joining my new teammates, wearing the Club’s colors, and giving my all to help the team achieve our objectives,” said Weigandt.

Weigandt, 24, joins the Club from Argentine powerhouse Boca Juniors, where he developed as a player in the youth ranks prior to breaking into the first team in 2019. Since then, he went on to make a total 72 appearances across all competitions, including 15 in the prestigious CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores, registering three goals and seven assists. Notably, in that time the right back helped Boca win five titles: two Argentine First Division titles (2020, 2022), a Copa de la Liga Profesional title (2022), a Supercopa de Argentina title (2022), and a Copa Argentina title (2019-20).

Additionally, the Avellaneda, Argentina native previously spent time out on loan during his time with Boca Juniors, having played for fellow Argentine club Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata from September 2020 through June 2021. Weigandt registered a total 21 appearances for Gimnasia y Esgrima across all competitions, contributing with three goals and three assists.

On the international stage, Weigandt has represented Argentina at U-17 and U-20 levels. Notably, he competed with the U-17 side at the 2017 South American U-17 Championship and with the U-20 team at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
