St. Louis CITY SC sign Tomas Totland from Häcken - Has a US passport

St. Louis CITY SC have completed their first transfer of the season. As first reported by Transfermarkt yesterday, St. Louis CITY SC have signed Norwegian-born right-back Tomas Totland from Swedish Allsvenskan side Häcken BK. The 24-year-old is predominantly a right back but can also play on the left and holds a US passport. Totland has signed a three-year deal with an option for 2027.

Sources with direct knowledge of the situation have also indicated to Transfermarkt that Häcken will receive a transfer fee in the region of $500,000 for Totland. One source from Sweden has described this transfer as an excellent deal for the Major League Soccer side. Totland was still under contract until December 2025, and his market value has recently increased to €900,000. “We are excited to bring Tomas to St. Louis after a lot of interest from European and MLS teams,” said sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel in a club statement. “He comes to our team with experience at a high level, including playing in both Champions League and Europa League matches this season. Along with his experience, he is well-rounded in both the attacking and defending phases.”

Signed for €400,000 from Norwegian side Tromsø in 2022, Totland has made a name for himself in Sweden this season. Scoring one goal and five assists in 32 games across all competitions, Totland not only helped his side to a third-place finish this year but also featured in all six games for Häcken in the Europa League this season. Häcken, in fact, reached the competition after winning the Allsvenskan in 2022. With Totland in the side, the club also won the Swedish Cup this year.

Indeed, signing Totland is a coup for St. Louis CITY SC. Transfermarkt understands that several German clubs and MLS clubs, including the Philadelphia Union, were also interested in signing the right-back this January. Instead, Totland is now headed to MLS, where the 24-year-old wants to make the next step in his career. Scouts who have watched the player closely have described Totland as a player with significant upside and the potential to develop into a top MLS-calibre wing-back who could significantly increase his market values in the coming years.
